The Best Right Backs

Right backs have become some of the most versatile players in Ultimate Team. Depending on the tactics used, they may need to defend against fast wingers, support attacks down the flank, overlap wide players or move into midfield during possession.

Pace receives the greatest importance in our ranking because it helps right backs recover defensively and create space when moving forward. Defending is almost as important, ensuring that attacking ability does not come at the cost of leaving the back line exposed.

Dribbling and passing are also key qualities. The best right backs should be able to carry the ball through pressure, make reliable passes in advanced areas and create useful angles for teammates. Physicality, shooting and the combined pace and defending score complete the comparison.

A high overall rating alone does not necessarily make a player the best option for this role. A more balanced card with strong pace, defending and dribbling can be considerably more effective than a technically gifted player who cannot keep up with the opponent’s winger.

Van Dijk and Saliba are the two most complete centre backs in the Premier League. Van Dijk combines elite defensive and physical attributes with exceptional height, while Saliba offers the best blend of pace, defending and composure for a high defensive line.

Gabriel, Gvardiol and van de Ven are excellent alternatives for different styles. Gabriel is the most defensively dominant option, Gvardiol adds outstanding passing and ball carrying, while van de Ven is the clear choice for squads that need recovery pace.

Frimpong is the fastest right back available and offers exceptional attacking movement, but Matheus Nunes is the more rounded option for players who require pace, passing and defensive reliability from the same card.

Reece James and Pedro Porro are the best technical choices, particularly for teams that build through their full backs. Timber and Muñoz provide more defensive security, while Livramento remains one of the most balanced options at a lower overall rating.

The Best Left Backs

Left backs perform many of the same tasks as right backs, but their value can vary considerably depending on the formation and the players around them. They may be required to stay deep and defend wide spaces, overlap constantly or provide an additional passing option in midfield.

Pace and defending are the main factors in our ranking. Pace allows a left back to track dangerous wingers and recover after joining an attack, while defending determines how effectively they can challenge, intercept and protect the far post.

Dribbling and passing help separate the most complete options from purely defensive players. A left back who can progress with the ball and deliver accurate passes gives the team more flexibility, particularly against opponents who press aggressively.

Nico O’Reilly leads this group because his card is unusually complete for a left back. He combines strong defending and physicality with useful pace, passing and dribbling, making him capable of playing as an overlapping full back or a more defensive option.

Hincapié and Lewis Hall are the strongest alternatives. Hincapié is the more reliable defensive choice, while Hall has the best passing in the group and gives a team more quality in possession. Aït Nouri, Robinson and Kerkez are particularly appealing for players who prioritise pace and attacking movement.
