FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades Introduction

What is an UP card?

Different to what happens on other game modes, and excepting the Ones to Watch cards, the FUT players aren’t automatically updated throughout the season according to their appearances in real life. Some may receive In Form cards, but most players remain with the characteristics they were given at the start of the season. In Ultimate Team, upgrades and downgrades are made through the release of new cards in two specific times: Summer and Winter upgrades. When a player is upgraded, the cards that start coming in packs have got the new ratings and attributes according to their performance on the real life pitch.

To each player who is upgraded during the FIFA 17 Winter upgrades season, it is assigned a new regular card which becomes available in packs until the end of the game, replacing the correspondent day 1 regular card. In other words, as soon as the new card is inserted in FUT packs, the old ones can only be found in the existing clubs and in the transfer market. Your odds of pulling the new card from a pack are exactly the same of pulling the original regular card before the update.

If you own the day 1 card of an upgraded player, your card will keep unchanged. If you want the improved version, you will need to buy the corresponding new card in the market or cross your fingers when opening a pack.

FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades Release Date

When FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades will be available?

In Ultimate Team, upgrades are made through the release of new updated cards in two specific times: Summer and Winter upgrades. The first one happens within the transition of one FIFA to another looking to reflect the player’s evolution between two seasons. The second one, in February, rewards the players who stood out the most along the first half of the season with the release of new improved cards.

The FIFA 17 Winter upgrades are usually assigned to the players who have played well in a consistent way throughout the first five months of the season, not only in few games, showing that their old regular card was really outdated. As soon as upgraded cards are released, they replace all the respective regular cards that were supposed to be released in packs until the end of the game. That is, the only card you will find in packs is the new one but you may find both cards in the transfer market.

We estimate to see more than 400 new cards this Winter. We believe that they will be released starting on February 17. In the past years, these were the release dates of the first batch:

FIFA 16 – 05/02/2016
FIFA 15 – 15/02/2015
FIFA 14 – 14/02/2014
FIFA 13 – 15/02/2013

FIFA 17 Ratings Refresh FAQ

What you need to know about cards from the FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades & Downgrades

Q: How are players upgraded on FIFA 17 Ultimate Team?
A: Different to what happens on other game modes, the players aren’t automatically updated throughout the season according to their appearances in real life. Some may receive In Form cards, but most players remain with the characteristics they were given at the start of the season. In Ultimate Team, upgrades & downgrades are made through the release of new cards in determined periods.

Q: Who chooses the players to be upgraded or downgraded?
A: A dedicated team from EA Sports.

Q: How do player upgrade cards look like?
A: They are regular cards (gold, silver and bronze).

Q: What’s the difference between the original card and the new one?
A: Only rating and stats change. In some cases the position can also be updated. All the rest remains the same.

Q: How long are FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades and Downgrades Players cards available in FIFA packs?
A: As soon as they are released for the first time, they remain in packs until the end of the game, replacing the day 1 cards.

Q: Can a player be downgraded?
A: Yes.

Q: Can a transferred player receive an upgraded card?
A: Yes, he can. Although EA Sports try separating player transfers/player upgrades, there are rare cases in which the same player is both transferred and upgraded at the same time. In that case both situations are passed on to one single card. That’s the case of Gonçalo Gudes, for example.

How the FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades Work

Rating and stats boost explanation

As we already have explained, it is not possible to improve the stats of any regular card. However, if a player stands out in the real world, in such a way that his card becomes strongly outdated, Electronic Arts comes to justice introducing a new type of card.

The Winter upgrades affect around 400 ratings that cannot go down. The gold cards are usually improved in 1 or 2 points, which is explained by the fact that they are only assigned to players who had a marked development and not to minor adjustments. Silver and bronze players are usually upgraded by at least 4 points, while in exceptional cases this upgrade can sometimes reach 15 points. The higher is the original rating, the lower is the boost.

It is rare but the position of the players in these cards may change if, they played really well in a different position.

FIFA 17 Upgraded Players Cards are physically identical to the originals, except on rating and stats.

FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades Guide - Rules, Release Date and FAQ

The things get more complicated when we try to explain what happens to IF cards during the FIFA 17 Winter upgrades. Different to what happens with the NIF cards, the IF cards released before the upgrades will be upgraded in the same proportion as those (but automatically) if an upgraded player’s new OVR rating equals or surpasses his existing first in-form’s rating. When an upgraded player with an existing IF gets upgraded across Quality tiers (eg. Silver to Gold), his lower-quality IF will not get an upgrade. According to EA, this is so “the IF card’s value and bronze/silver squads are not negatively affected”. The goal is to preserve the in-form’s high value.

It is important to make clear that, contrary to what happened in previous years, when a player is upgraded, the stats of all his IF cards only get a boost if the rating is also upgraded.

To make the things more clear, we will take a look to a few examples.

Example 1

FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades Guide - Rules, Release Date and FAQ

Player: Sergio Asenjo (Villarreal CF)
NIF Rating (day 1): 81
Boost: +3
UP Rating: 84
First IF Rating: 84
New First IF Ratings: 87

Let’s take Asenjo as example. He started the season with an 81 rated card but in the Winter Upgrades he got an 84 rated UP card. His 81 rated card stopped coming in packs as soon as the 84 rated one was released, but his owners were never rewarded with any upgrade at all because that’s only valid for IF cards. Since he already had an IF card, 84 rated, and since new OVR rating equals his existing first in-form’s rating, this was automatically upgraded to 87, which corresponded to the three points upgrade his regular card received. However, since there is no other card with a better rating than this one, EA may decide to upgrade it to 85. Any potential future IF card would be rated over the new IF rating.

Example 2

FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades Guide - Rules, Release Date and FAQ

Player: Christian Eriksen (Spurs)
NIF Rating (day 1): 84
Boost: +1
UP Rating: 85
First IF Rating: 86

In this case, the new overall rating is lower than the one from the first IF card. The new 85 rated card replaces the 84 rated one in packs, but the overall ratings of his three IF cards don’t change. If the boost was two points, the three TOTW cards would be also improved. However, if you pay attention to the image, you will see that the stats of the IF cards have changed. For each attribute, the bonuses were the same of the difference between the regular and the UP card. This was how it was supposed to work on previous years but not in FIFA 17.

Example 3

FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades Guide - Rules, Release Date and FAQ

Player: Loïs Diony (Dijon)
NIF Rating (day 1): 70
Boost: +2
UP Rating: 72
First IF Rating: 73

Let’s give another example with another player that will probably receive an upgrade. The rating of his new NIF card (72) will be lower than the rating of his first IF card (73). It may looks natural to you that his IF card doesn’t get an upgrade but it isn’t so obvious. In fact, that only happens because his UP card isn’t upgraded across quality tiers. If, for example, his TOTW card was 76 rated and his new card was 75 rated, all the IF cards would be upgraded accordingly except the lower-qualify IF card.

FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades Players Cards Prices

What happens to the UP cards’ prices?

As we would expect, as soon as the FIFA 17 upgraded players cards are released their price stays fixed way above the regular ones. These, on the other hand, start their way down. Also, with time the UP cards lose value once their quantity starts being superior to the rest of the cards. The price difference between the UP card initially and the regular card depends on many factors, such as the number of rating points gained, stats bonuses or an eventual position change.

When the player already has at least one IF card, this card is improved in the same proportion as the regular. There are people who choose the risk to invest in IF cards of players that have good chances of receiving an UP in advance because they know that in case that happens the return will be enormous. The bigger the player’s rating and popularity, the bigger is the IF card’s appreciation. In some cases profit can surpass 300%. At a long run, the cheapest cards lose value, while the most expensive ones slowly have their price increased. If you’re thinking about investing in these cards, be careful not to bet on the cards that are already being way too speculated. It’s just that sometimes the speculation is so big around determined cards that, after the upgrades, the improved IF cards’ market prices are inferior to what they were before the announcement. On the other hand, if you have a NIF of a player you think is going to receive an upgrade, it may be a good idea to sell him in advance so you minimize the loss.

A: First because probably the upgraded player’s new OVR rating does not equal or surpass his existing in-form’s rating. If it does, then it is because the upgraded player with an existing IF gets upgraded across Quality tiers (eg. Silver to Gold).

Q: Why wasn’t a certain player’s IF card upgraded if his NIF and UP were of the same category?
A: Probably because that IF card already had the maximum rating for its category: 64 or 74.

Q: It is possible to exist two regular cards of the same player with different ratings?
A: Yes. That’s what happens when a player receives an upgrade, two cards start coexisting: one corresponds to the start of the season and the other has got improved ratings and attributes.

Q: When there’s an upgrade, which cards are the ones that come in packs?
A: The new ones.

Q: Which cards are released first: transfers or upgrades?
A: Transfers.

Q: Do all upgraded players get a new card?
A: Yes. Although, if you own a regular card of a player that was upgraded there won’t be any alterations.

Q: The NIF and TOTW cards are the only ones to be upgraded?
A: No. Every single IF card has the chance to be upgraded, which includes for example the Heroes and Record Breaker cards.

Q: How can I predict which players have good chances of receiving an upgrade card?
A: Even if you don’t keep up much with the real life football, there are two indicators to help out in this prediction: the number of a player’s IF cards; constant rating upgrades on H2H.

Q: Can a player be downgraded?
A: Yes.

Q: How many points are the players upgraded by normally?
A: For most gold players the upgrade is of just 1 or 2 points. Silver and bronze players are usually upgraded by at least 4 points, while in exceptional cases this upgrade can sometimes reach 15 points.

Q: Do the player’s upgraded stats increase proportionally?
A: Generally, yes.

Q: Can I have both the original and the new card in my club?
A: Yes. However, a squad can only have one of them.

Q: Can a transferred player receive an upgraded card?
A: Yes, he can. Although EA Sports try separating player transfers/player upgrades, there are rare cases in which the same player is both transferred and upgraded at the same time. In that case both situations are passed on to one single card.

Q: What advantage do the FIFA 17 Winter upgrades bring us?
A: The upgrades increase the squads’ quality level, diminishing the differences between the game and real life football. Besides, they can also represent good trading opportunities, mainly when it comes to IF cards.

Q: I already have a squad. What is it good to me?
A: If you’re already “done” with your squad, the upgrades increase your improvement opportunities. If your squad is based on a league, for example, upgrades can improve the players you already have or they can promote others for a position or two.

Q: What cares should I take with these new cards coming?
A: If you want to buy a NIF, make sure you’re not paying the price the UP demands. If you want to sell an UP, make sure you’re not selling for the corresponding NIF price.

  1. If there is a silver card rated 73 on first day and has only got a TOTW card once pushing him up to a 74 overall. If he gets a + 3 upgrade will his IF card move up to a Gold IF 77 overall and his normal silver card a 76 gold? Thanks for the article and I’d be grateful if you could reply to my question.
    Thanks

    1. Well, as you know there are new rules this year and for that reason we can’t answer to your question with 100% sure. In this case, we believe his TOTW card remains unchanged.

  2. I have Ousmane Dembélé OTW card. If he gets a upgrade from 77 to 80, the OTW card will still be at 84? And i wonder if i should sell him now, or wait until the upgrade. Wil he go up or down in price?

  3. I have a team of the group stage mertens, will this card be upgraded as it’s a performance based card?

      1. So if Mane is boosted to 82, will his IF be boosted to an 83 or 85? And does that apply to his OTW

    1. Good questions. We believe that all untradeable cards, like FUT Champions cards you receive on monthly rewards, will not be upgraded. However, we will have to wait until an official announcement.
You can read more about it here.

  4. Will there be any completely new cards from winter transfers? As in a new player that doesn’t have a card in FUT at the moment but got transferred to a team represented in FUT during the winter transfer window, will he get a card in this update or will it only happen in the summer update?

    1. That usually doesn’t happen because no players are added to the database after the game starts. However, we heard that it may happen this year with a few players. Just with 10-12 players.

  5. if i have IF cards will they automatically upgrade or do i have to buy the new cards?
like i have the 87 rated IF Mertens but his base IF is 85 and his regular card is probably going to an 85 so what will happen and what should i do?

  6. I have a question. I have balotelli 84 totw. Balotelli also has a 80 scream card. Lets say balotelli gets an upgrade to 81. Will my 84 totw get upgraded?

Ps. Nice job with the website, helps out a lot 🙂

    1. Thank you.
That is a good question. Since this is the first time we have scream cards, there is no way to know what will happen. We believe that your 84 rated card will be upgraded but there is nothing official about that.
For more details please check this.

  7. I have an 87 icardi but his lowest inform is 84 but that’s what his UP card is. Will my 87 be upgraded

  8. thijs biessels

i have jordan henderson movember 81 and his new winter upgrade card is 82 .
and he was 80. what happen with the movember 81 card.
    upgrade he to 83 rating

  9. Ahmed zaghloul

How about the scream team or the movember special cards; eg mohamed salah; if mohamed salah get upgraded will the scream team version of salah get upgraded as well automatically ?

  10. Will players from team of the group stage get upgraded if there regular card gets an upgrade e.g. Ousmane Dembele

  11. Hi,
I have 87 IF Lukaku. Will that Card get beter if the normal Card becomes 85, equal with his Halloweencard, bit -1 of his first IFcard?

    Greets

      1. A special & risky card that Lukaku haha. We will have to wait and see.
Is it wise to buy players like normal Boateng, Neuer, Vidal? Or will the price of those cards go down?

Greetz & thanks for your advise in advance.

  12. Hi Rodrigo.
I have a Blue SBC Defoe, IF Defoe and IF Moses.… if Moses or/and Defoe is upgraded, will the blue SBC card and the two IF go up maybe?
    Thanks

    1. Hi. We still don’t know if SBC cards will be upgraded or not.4
Moses and Defoe IF cards will be upgraded only if their upgraded player’s new OVR rating equals or surpasses their existing first in-form’s rating

  13. Do u believe OTW cards will be more valuable than say Dembele’s highest rated IF after the winter upgrades?

  14. I have a blue and white Dzeko… if he is upgraded will the blue and white infirm go up and how about ones to watch cards as wel?

  15. Thank you for the really helpful information Rodrigo. I was thinking of investing some money on IF cards that are likely to get an upgrade. I was thinking of investing in diego costas IF card. He has two and my question is witch one of his two do you think will make more profit. One has 86 and the other 87 rating. Will they both get an automatic upgrade or will only one of them get?
Or do you recommend any other players that will make more of a profit. Like Kante or Sanches or whoever? And final question when is the best time to buy the IF cards that i am going to invest in. When will they be as cheapest?

    1. Hi. Thank you.
      1) Since his UP card has, at least, the same rating of his IF1 card, all cards will be upgraded.
      2) It’s up to you in which card you should invest. In my opinion, never invest in the lower rated card.
      3) The best day to buy them should be January 9 but nothing is guaranteed.
      Regards

  16. Excellent piece as always Rodrigo! One question, do you know if there has been any confirmation as to whether SBC cards will also be affected by the winter upgrades in the same way that other IF cards are?
