FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players Guide – Introduction

There are some things about players that not everyone knows. We wrote this guide to help gamers to understand why players are different from each other and what can change on the same players.

When you choose the players for your club, you should pay special attention to players’ attributes according to your play style, formation and preferences. It is also important keeping in mind that a player performance depends not only from their attributes but also by their fitness and chemistry (including his chemistry style).

Let’s take a closer look to how FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players are made.

FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players’ Attributes

One good thing about this game is that you can pick the players that best suit the needs of your team. This is made thanks to the attributes. It is what makes all players be different from each other. A player without attributes is someone that doesn’t know how to play football.

Most of the gamers only pay attention to the six main attributes: pace, shooting, passing, dribbling, defending and heading (the goalkeepers have another six main attributes). It is not enough. They only show, in a general way, how player is. It’s a kind of summary. To choose the right player you should look to his more than 30 attributes.

Here are all of the FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players attributes.

Physical Attributes

In FUT 14, there are two physical attributes groups, mobility and power, each one with four:

    Acceleration
The higher the value, the shorter the time needed to reach maximum speed.
    Agility
How agile the player is while moving or turning.
    Reactions
How quickly a player responds to a situation.
    Sprint Speed
How fast the player runs while at top speed.
    Balance
The ability to maintain balance after a physical challenge.
    Jumping
The higher the value is the higher the player can jump.
    Stamina
Determines the rate at which a player will tire during a game.
    Strength
The higher the value, the more likely the player will win a physical challenge.

Technical Attributes

FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players have 16 technical attributes split in general skills, shooting, passing and defending groups:

    Ball Control
The higher the value, the less likely the ball is to bounce away from the player after controlling it.
    Curve
The higher the value the more curve/curl the player is capable of putting on the ball. E.g. Beckham free kick.
    Dribbling
A higher value means the player will be able to keep better possession of the ball whilst dribbling.
    Heading Accuracy
The heading accuracy of the player for either a pass or a shot.
    Finishing
The accuracy of shots using foot, inside the penalty area.
    Free Kick Accuracy
The higher the value the better the accuracy of a direct free kick on goal.
    Long Shots
The accuracy of shots from outside the penalty area.
    Penalties
The accuracy of shots from inside the penalty area.
    Shot Power
How hard the player hits the ball when taking a shot at goal.
    Volleys
The accuracy and power of volleys at goal.
    Crossing
How accurately the player crosses the ball.
    Passing (Long)
How well a player performs a long pass in the air to his team mate.
    Passing (Short)
How well a player performs a short / ground pass to his team mate.
    Marking
The ability to track and defend an opposing player.
    Tackle (Sliding)
The ability of the player to time sliding tackles so that they win the ball rather than give away a foul.
    Tackle (Standing)
The ability of the player to time standing tackles so that they win the ball rather than give away a foul.

Goalkeeping Attributes

In FUT 14, there are six goalkeeping attributes (they are showed on GK cards):

    GK Diving
The GK’s ability to make a save whilst diving through the air.
    GK Handling
How cleanly the GK catches the ball and does he hold on to it.
    GK Kicking
The length and accuracy of goal kicks, from out of the hands or on the ground.
    GK One-On-Ones
The ability to close down an opponent in one-on-one situations.
    GK Positioning
The GK’s ability to position himself correctly when saving shots.
    GK Reflexes
The agility of the goalkeeper when making a save.

Mental Attributes

FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players have four mental attributes:

    Aggression
The frequency & aggression of jostling, tackling & slide tackling.
    Composure
The higher the value, the better the player performs when under pressure from an opponent.
    Positioning
The ability of a player to take up good positions during a game.
    Tactical Awareness
How well the player executes his team’s tactics.
    Vision
The players awareness of the position of his team mates & opponents around him.

Work Rate

Work Rate is something really important in FIFA 14 Ultimate Team players. It says to you how often a player goes to defend or to attack.

Every player has two different types of work rates: defensive and attacking. In both, defensive and attacking, you can have High, Medium or Low levels. Knowing the work rates of the FIFA 14 Ultimate Team players could be more important than most of gamers thinks.

To understand better what we are talking about, let’s look at three examples of how a player with the wrong work rate should persuade you get him off the team:

  • Imagine that you have a formation with 2 CB’s. If both CB’s have high attacking work rates it will means that sometimes nobody will be in your defence.
  • Imagine that you have a formation with only one ST. If he has low attacking work rate and high defensive work rate, it means that no one will be in the right place to shoot at goal.
  • Imagine that you have a formation with two CM’s and you want the one of them that helps the defence. You probably will need a player with high defensive work rate. If a player has high attacking work rate too, you should ensure that he has good stamina. Otherwise, in the end of the match he will be tired compromising the result of your match.

The right work rate depends of the formation you are using, the players’ attributes, their positions and even your play style. In FUT 14 you can not change the work rates. That’s why you should look carefully to work rates when you are choosing a player to your team.

You can see the work rates of your players, going to their Bio section (not available in FUT Web App).

Traits

To make FIFA 14 Ultimate Team players even more unique, EA assigns to them some traits. It helps to define a single identity for each player. The players are all different.

The trait assigned to a player can be a good thing but can also be a bad thing. These are the traits that you can find in FIFA 14 Ultimate Team players:

    Argues with referee
    Avoids using weaker foot
    Diver
    Dives into tackles
    Early Crosser
    Finesse Shot
    Flair
    Giant Throw-in
    GK Long Throw
    GK Punches
    GK Up for Corners
    Injury Free
    Injury Prone
    Leader
    Long Passer
    Long Shot Taker
    Long Throw
    Loyal
    Outside Foot Shot
    Playmaker
    Power Free Kick
    Power Header
    Selfish
    Speed Dribbler
    Swerve Pass
    Team Player
    Tries to beat offside trap

It is easy to understand the importance of the traits according to our play style.

Other Attributes

Skills and Weak Foot are another special attributes that all the FIFA 14 Ultimate Team players have.

The Star Skill Moves measures the ability that a player has to perform technical moves. To all skill moves are assigned a number between 1 (least complex) and 5 (most complex). The players with higher skills, as Ronaldo or Neymar, are able to perform more complex moves.

If you often use these moves to confuse the opponents, you should pay attention to this attribute. Otherwise, you will not be able to perform all the skills that you want.

The Weak Foot measures the ability of a player to shoot with one foot as he does with his preferred foot.

All players have a preferred foot. Having 5 star weak foot means that weak foot shot is identical to there preferred foot shot. Having 1 star weak foot means that the player can only shoot with one foot.

Having players with high star weak foot means that you will probably score more goals as they shoot more easily.

FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players Cards

As you may imagine, the players’ cards are the most important FUT 14 cards. If your club has that type of cards, it means that you can control those players on the pitch.

You can buy hundreds of players for your club. Just buy their cards. There are many cards of the same player but you can only have one of each. That is, you can not have two cards of the same player. In fact, you can have two cards of the same player in your club if each one have different clubs (player was transferred) and you place them in different squads.

You may learn about the different players’ cards HERE but now we will explain what you can find on a FIFA 14 Ultimate Team players’ card. It has a lot of information that you must pay attention to improve your chances of victory.

Rating and Attributes

To know how good a player is, you shouldn’t look to his rating. It only shows, generally, how popular he is, allowing you to compare him with the others. The overall rating is NOT an average or an reflection of the all attributes. It isn’t derived from the actual technical, mental and physical attributes. It represents the players’ reputation. EA Sports assigned the ratings to the players according to the league that they play, the club, the performances and the role they have in their teams. Sometimes, FIFA 14 Ultimate Team players with lower ratings could be better choices.

Depending on their ratings, players may belong to one of the following groups:
Bronze, for ratings up to 64;
Silver, for ratings between 65 and 74;
Gold, for ratings between 75 and 99.

The rating is also important because it is responsible for the star rating system of teams. The star rating of a squad is a representation of the overall rating of each player in the squad. This is calculated from the players in the starting line-up and on the subs bench. It is a requirement for some tournaments and it is used too in matchmaking.

Here are the star rating ranges:

    5 stars, to overall rating > 80
4.5 stars, to overall ratings between 77 and 80
4 stars, to overall ratings between 74 and 76
3.5 stars, to overall ratings between 70 and 73
3 stars, to overall ratings between 66 and 69
2.5 stars, to overall ratings between 64 and 65
2 stars, to overall ratings between 62 and 63
1.5 stars, to overall ratings between 60 and 61
    1 star, to overall ratings < 60

If you want to know how a player is, you should look to his attributes. The six main ones (pace, shooting, passing, dribbling, defence and heading) of FIFA 14 Ultimate Team players give you the idea of how they play. But it is not enough. If you want to know exactly what you could expect from them, you should look to all their attributes and not the main six. In this case there is the exception of goalkeepers who have on their cards all the stats that determine their performances.

Each attribute ranges between 1 and 99 (99 correspond to the perfection). Such information is written on the all players’ cards. Depending on your play style, your formation and the attributes of the others players in the squad, it may be a good option to choose players that are better in some specific attributes. For example, a team that often uses crossing for heading should have a striker with good heading.

FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players Guide - Attributes and Players Cards

FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players Cards (view 1 – summary)

Position

A crucial information when you are planning your squad is the preferred position of the players. You can choose to place the goalkeeper as a striker but, as you may expect, the performance will be very poor. You should try to respect the player card detail about his preferred position. Otherwise, you will be damaging his individual chemistry and the chemistry of the team.

Cards of the same player may have different positions. If you have a card whose position does not fit into the formation of your team, you may have to make one of the following:

  • Trade the card on the market by another identical but with the correct position;
  • Lose a few points of squad chemistry and keep the player adapted to the new position;
  • Buy and use training cards that modify the position showed on the player’s card.

Fitness

The performance of a player on the pitch depends on his attributes, his chemistry, team’s chemistry and his fitness.

It is very important to keep your players with high fitness. As it is easy to understand, the fitness depends of the playing time, the effort spent on the match, and of the injuries that eventually the player may suffer. The fitness level is printed on the player’s cards. It is a number that ranges between 1 and 99.

It is important to pay attention to the fitness because a group of players with good chemistry will have no use if their physical condition is poor. To fix this, you may make them rest in some matches, providing a rotation of your squad, or buy and use FITNESS CARDS.

During the matches, players can get injured and being out of the following matches. On the players’ cards you can find the details about how many time the player will be out and what kind of injury he has. Both are important for you since you will be able to know how to manage your squad and how you can speed up the player’s recovery.

The global healing cards can reduce the healing time up to four matches. However, if you know if the injury was on the foot, leg, knee, arm, shoulder, head or back, you will be able to buy and apply specific healing cards for these ills and reduce the downtime by up to five matches.

Contracts

Every match that a player plays is a contract that he spends. The only way to prevent a player from running out of contracts and being unable to play, apart from not using him, is buying CONTRACT CARDS. That is why it is recommended that you save some coins in order to being able to buy contract cards and keep your players available.

The contract card is the only consumable card that you really have to buy in order to play. That’s why it is so important.

The number of contracts is also expressed on the player’s card as a number between 0 and 99.

Chemistry Styles

When a player is released in a card, his chemistry style is basic (BAS), the starter style. It means that all his attributes are improved in the same way (one point if chemistry is the higher possible). If you want to adjust the players attributes to your squad needs, you can apply a CHEMISTRY STYLE CARD. In the active squad menu, you have a visual indicator (little green arrow) next to the stats of each player showing which ones will be affected by the chemistry and how much will be the potential chemistry boost.

The Chemistry Styles allow you to let choose what stats are changed but not how much it will change. It depends of your chemistry. If you get individual chemistry 10, you will get the higher improvement possible in the stats you chosen.

When you buy a player, look very well to which chemistry style he has. If he doesn’t have the chemistry style you want, you can apply him another chemistry style card or buy another card of the same player with the right style.

Chemistry

Expressed on the player card as a number between 0 and 10, the chemistry evaluates how well he identifies himself with his teammates, the manager and the team. It is a factor that helps the game play by interacting with the familiarity of the players with the positioning, the relation with the other players and the manager.

When you buy a player to your squad, you should check if he will get a good chemistry (at least, individual chemistry 7).

You can learn everything about chemistry in our guide, clicking HERE.

More Details

A player card give you even more details. You can check the biographical details about the player, his statistics and the item details.

The players’ cards have some biographical information about them that has a merely informative interest. In addition to a photograph of the player’s face, it also includes his name, surname, nickname, nationality, club and country where he plays, date of birth, height, foot preference and work rates.

On the FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players’ cards you can also see some statistics about performance of those players. In particular, you can check how many matches he played, how many goals he scored, how many assists he made and how many yellow and red cards were shown to him.

It is also possible to check three details of a specific player card: the purchased date, the price of this acquisition and the cumulative number of owners.

FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Players Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Where can I find all the attributes of my players ?
A: As you know, the players cards only show the six main attributes. To know all of them simply start a FUT 14 match, pause the game and select “Team Management”. Then, view that player’s attributes. Another option is to use FUT databases.

Q: Can I have more than one card of the same player stored in my club ?
A: You can have several cards of the same player but only in the transfer list. To have more than one card of the same player in your club, you need to place each one in different squads and they must be from different clubs (the player has moved to another club).

Q: How do I change the work rates of my players ?
A: In FUT 14 it is not possible.

Q: Getting a high/high work rate is a good thing ?
A: Usually not. It means that your players will be often out of position. They want to attack but they also want to defend. It depends of your formation, play style and the player position.

Q: I can not see the work rates or the assists in the Bio ?
A: It is only available in the console.

Q: I don’t use skills. Do I need players with high star skills ?
A: No. If you don’t perform skills, it doesn’t matter the star skills of your players. However, our advice is that you should learn, at least, one skill movement. It doesn’t need to be a 5 star skill movement.

Q: Why some players are injured most of the time ?
A: The main reason is because they have a trait called “Injury Prone”.

Q: A gold player is always better than a silver one ?
A: Usually yes. But not always. What makes the player gold is his rating. What really matters to know if a player is good or not, is his attributes. Some silver players can have better attributes than gold players. The same happens with bronze/silver players.

Q: It is possible for a player to get a card of a higher level ?
A: It is not very common but may happen. It is only possible if a player already has the higher rating from his level and gets two IF cards.

  1. I was wondering how the in game stats of a player translates to the 6 attributes in FUT.

    1. That’s a really good question. Each IG stat has its own weight in each basic stat.
We will explain this matter very well in our players guide to be launched in 2 or 3 weeks.

  2. Hi. Couls you tell me if i can raise my player’s ratings in FUT because i often see players like Pogba that are being sold around 200.000 coins and their ratings are raised for examble from 75 to 89 or less.

    1. Hi. When a player is suspended for at least the next game, his card has a red rectangle sign on the top right side. It is very useful, specially when you are on your main squad menu.
You can see a picture here.

  3. Hiii..
I am at level 35 in fifa 14 fut android, but I m not getting good card in packs, can u tell me at what level I will get rare cards

  6. Whenever i try to play a match in ultimate team it keeps on saying “players injured or banned” what does this mean

  7. Currently i’m in division 7 and enter SPFL. “Max. team star rating: 3 stars” if im not mistaken i got 73 star rating but still can’t play.

Min. number of players from Scottish Prem: 2 in the squad’s starting 11 “already have 2 in my squad”

    TIA..

    1. Hi.
“Max. team star rating: 3 stars”. If you have a 73 rating, you already have more than the maximum. You have 3.5 star when you need to have no more than 3.
try to get rating 69 to be able to play.

  8. hi,
when is the best time to use fitness card ? When my player’s fitness is 80, 70 or 60?
    thanks

  9. Hi I wanna knw is it possible to increase a player attribute..plz describe hw exactly is it done

  10. I want to put a chemistry style on my Isco so that I can upgrade is reactions, but I’m not sure what attribute to boost as I don’t know which one the reactions are included in, can you help?

  11. Hello, how can you max stats on a GK? I saw a goalkeeper on the transfer market and it was a shiny gold… Only to have another separate gold box around the rating and position, the stats had yellow triangles next to them, how can I does this to my goalkeeper of a shiny gold?

  12. May i ask you something? Why does my player which is a 82 rating is swapped with a 80 rated player in my subsitute my squad rating drop from 85 to 84 instead of raising

  13. Great guide. Quick question. What do the traits do? Some of them are obvious, but what does ‘loyal’ or ‘flair’ add to the player for example?

  14. Great help, thanks! I just have one question though, how do you get the all together attribute on the Players Card? For example, to get dribbling, would you add dribbling and ball control together or do you add dribbling, ball control and agility together? If you do know, could you tell me how to work out all of them?
    Thanks!

    1. I meant to say would you add dribbling and ball control together and divide by 2 or would you add dribbling, ball control and agility together and divide by 3!

  15. Hi Chief.

Every time I upgrade an players attributes. After a played match the attribut goes back to the normal state

Like Spd of goalkeep is 38 when upgrade plus 10 48 after match its back to 38.

Is this normal or I’m I doing something wrong.

    grtzz KingFshot

    1. It’s normal, they’re only meant to last one game! Otherwise if you added a 10+ attribute card to a center-backs pace and made it turn from 72 to 82 and it stayed that way, it would be to easy!

      1. Ah oke that sounds fair though 🙂 so basically if I want a better goalkeeper I’ll need to get a better one or upgrade his chemistry , right ?

        Grtz KingFshot

  16. hey, Im trying to figure out how to get FI cards, like the ones that are in the team of the week, I have also seen other colors, orange, purple, and blue, but I cant seem to find them on the market or in the gold packs, is there any way to find/get them?

    1. Hi.
You need to read THIS. You have everything explained there.
You need to search better on the market. They are they. Filter by an high price and you will see them (purple is not available). In packs you may find them too. Just buy 1 million packs. 🙂

  17. hi im just wiriting about my players card,it dosent show there faces on the cards,i have a bpl team and the only face that appears is ozils updated card why??

  18. Kundan Ghanekar

    Nice one. But I have a question…
I have created my Italian ultimate team..consisting ballotelli ,Di Natalie, Prilo, de Rossi ,marchisio,Buffon, candreva, totti, chiellini, barzagli, ogbonna…subs-shaarawy,montolivo,david luiz,kolarov,sanchez…..right now team rating is 84 with 100 chemistry…which sub should I use to go to 85 rating… I have two spaces more to fill that

    1. Hi.
We have not tried most of these players. We will do it soon to publish the Serie A guide. Until there, we can not give our opinion since it will not be a quality answer. Please ask us again when we release the Serie A guide.
      Regards

  19. I have used training cards on players and notice they are now back to their normal attributes. How long are do the training cards last? I thought this would be a permanent thing.

  20. I just bought a Daniel Sturridge card that has a gray/silver bar across the top of the card and his main attributes are astoundingly high. Any idea what this is?

  21. I’m playing onn my iPad… But I can’t figure how to give my active players contracts? I have contracts in my club but when I try to add it to my players it says I do not have any consumables

  22. Do your players need to be in the subs or reserves to be rested? If i pick a different squad all together will my players not in that squads first team, subs, and reserves be rested?

    1. Oh god! It is a really good question but we can’t remember and we don’t have the console here to test it. It probably will work too but we will need to check it first.
      Regards

  23. Hi Rodrigo 🙂 love the detailed information you are providing here!!! Can you please tell me where I can find the player attribute database you keep referring to?? In-game pause menu is garbage, 30 seconds of pause time is not nearly enough. I want to compare and analyse players on my team against transfer market players before wasting coins on a player that might not have the skills I am looking for. The ones I like are: curve, finishing, long shots, shot power, strength, acceleration and sprint speed. Please provide a link to this database. Thank you very much! 😀

      1. rodrigo u friggin rule bro….exactly what i was looking for man …..i play on xbox – my gamer tag is: biggdaddyregg …..add me if you want to play buddy 😀

  24. Hey,
Thanks for the article, helped me a lot. I couldn’t figure a couple of things out, though… Where can I find all these 30 attributes? Where can I see them? I only manage to see the top 6, that stay on the players card. But the other ones, just don’t know where to look.
One more thing – besides of the consumables, how can the players increase their stats? I played like 20 matches with my team, and some of the players have green arrows to some of their attributes. On what does this increase depend? How come it affects just some of the players with some of the stats? And where is this team morale, which should increase with every victory on the field?
    Thanks in advance 🙂

    1. Hi.
      Let’s see…
      1) You can find all the attributes in-game. Stop the match and go to your squad management. You can also find them on a database.
      2) Team morale is not any more in FUT 14.
      3) A player card can not be improved except with training cards and only for a match. The arrows that you are talking are the boost of chemistry styles. It is a bit long to explain here but we will publish on Sunday a great great great article explaining everything about it. Don’t miss it.
      Regards

  25. Hey
I was reading something on your website and cannot find it now(it was about ten rules to get richer or something like that)plz can u send me it’s link

    2.can I transfer my fut13 coins to fut 14
    Thanks

  26. Hi thanks for the helpful guide but my players in ultimate tea have yellow on them and not green what should I do ? Is it there fitness ?

    1. Hi.
You probably are talking about chemistry links. Are the yellow that you are talking the connections between players ? If yes, check this FUT 13 guide. It has changed and we are preparing a new one but you can get some ideas from there.

  27. Toine pieters

Hi, i reacently joined fifa 14 on my ipad. In the ultimate team mode, i just can’t seem to find the button of the assign to squad. So the players i bought are in my club, but not in my active team.. I see the ones that are active have a green dot in the left corner of their cards in my club, and the unassigned ones without a dot. Where and how can i assign these players to my active squad?
    Thx in advance

      1. Hi Toine, I have the same issue but found a work around. You have to make space in your active squad first. Click on the player you want to sacrifice and select ‘swap with club’. You will then be able to replace that player with one from you club.

        Hope this helps.

Also, top marks Rodrigo on a great resource. I have a lot to learn!

  28. Hi,
I bought a gold player and I don’t know how to put him in the active squad, can you please reply ASAP, thank you.

    1. Hi.
It’s easier than you think. Just go click on your player (he is probably in the transfer target list) and choose ‘Send to Active Squad’. If he is not there or in the transfer list or in the unassigned list, go to ‘my club’ and click on the same button.
      Regards

  29. Hi, recently started playing fifa14 on my ipad . I have banned players in my squad can I know how do I unbanned them? Or they cannot be use anymore ?

    1. You can sell them (send to transfer list), quick sell them (discard) or remove them from your active squad. By what you have described, it seems that was the last one. In that case, just go to ‘My Club’ and click oon the player you want to come back. Then, select ‘Place in the Active Squad’.

  30. Hey, what’s an easy way of boosting a player’s chemistry?
I have a team that is full of spanish league players but its hard finding players for some positions, how can i boost the chemistry of a player from english league to be 10? is 7 chemistry too bad or i wont notice it?

    thanks

    1. If they are not in the right position you will not get 10. 7 is not so bad but don’t build a squad full of 7’s. Remember to use position cards to adjust to your formation.

  31. Hi,
Thank you for your helpful articles. I play FUT 14 for ios. Do ios players have the same physical, mental, technical attributes, and work rates as in FUT 14 for consoles? I cannot see any of these special stats on ios FUT.

      1. Do those kind of workrates and stats even exist on ios though? There is no way to view stats (like strength and stamina) on ios so far.

  32. Hi Rodrigo, nice guide, congratulations!

Two of my playes have a yellow note on their right side, but I cant manage to see what that this means.
