Introduction to the FUT 14 Portuguese League Guide
Building a team is the biggest challenge in FIFA 14 Ultimate Team. It doesn’t need to be the best team, even because the budget may not allow it, but it needs to be the player’s stature for him to obtain success.
When choosing which players to play with, you will have to look carefully at their attributes. Choosing a team based on ratings is one of the most common mistakes on FUT 14. It’s precisely this aspect that this guide focuses on. For each position, and focusing on the truly important attributes, we’ll show who are the best athletes to choose.
It’s also important that the player checks to see if the player he chooses fits the formations he likes to play in. For example, a good full back will be useless if the player only uses formations with three defenders. According to those formations, the player must be cautious to look at the work rates, trying to relate them with the ones we advise in our Formations Guide.
Last but not least, it’s mandatory that you tune all of your team so that the individual and team chemistry be as high possible. For this last step to be easier, the majority of the players start to define the type of team they’re building. Some choose gathering players of the same nationality, while others decide to form a team of players from the same league. The most popular leagues are the Brazilians and the Barclays Premier League. There are also more experienced players that can form hybrid teams without damaging the chemistry a lot.
All of these steps are necessary to have; it could be that the team is not always well built as it could’ve been. This article aims to help those that think or want to form a FIFA 14 Ultimate Team based on players from the Zon Sagres Portuguese League. Even the ones have one, could take out some valuable conclusion from this guide that could help turn your team even better.
It’s important that the readers understand that this guide is simply guidance. It’s a theme too vast and the player’s combinations are almost infinite. Besides, there are various factors that influence the choices, like it’s one’s style of play, the formations used, the available budget, the preferences or even the time spent playing. There’s still one uncertain component: a good player for someone might not be for another. If there was a better team everyone would fight to get it. Part of the fun of FIFA 14 Ultimate Team is this: everyone has their personal club and players.
Another important point and that must stay very clear is that whoever is reading this guide, it’s about some criteria we chose and should be of everyone’s knowledge:
- In this guide we didn’t consider silver or bronze player. Most players don’t assume them to be a better option than gold players, so to simplify the guide’s analysis we didn’t include them. In the future we may come to publish guides exclusively talking about these categories.
- In this guide we didn’t consider In Forms (IF). They’re extremely expensive and in most cases are not considered good value for money. They should only be used by players with generous budgets, that already have the best team possible and that want small upgrades.
- In this guide we didn’t consider players that have been transferred to other clubs or that have been reviewed (UP). Only players that started their season in the Portuguse League and with their original attributes were considered.
- In this guide we didn’t consider changes made on a players performance such happens when applying training or chemistry styles cards.
- To make the comprehension of this guide easier we divided the players in nine distinct groups in order of their original position: Goalkeeper (GK), central backs (CB), right backs (RB and RWB), left backs (LB and LWB), central defensive midfielders (CDM) central midfielders (CM and CAM), right midfielders (RM, RW and RF), left midfielders (LM, LW and LF) and forwards (CF and ST).
- In the chapter where FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Zon Sagres teams are suggested, the prices considered are the ones of the date of the guide’s publication: March 2014. It’s natural that the prices have suffered some oscillations throughout the season, so they should only be considered as guiding prices.
FUT 14 Portuguese League Goalkeepers (GK)
Goalkeepers are the players that are less used on field. Because of this they are also the disdained when building a team. Most players start their purchases with a forward, later they strengthen the midfield the defence and only later the goal. The truth is a good goalkeeper may be worth a lot of goals. It’s good investment because they’re normally the most economically accessible players.
MOST HIGH-RATED GOALKEEPERS
Helton | 81 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Rui Patrício | 81 | Portugal | Sporting CP |
Artur Moraes | 79 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Eduardo | 75 | Portugal | Braga |
When choosing a good goalkeeper it’s not only down to his rating. There are two fundamental attributes for choosing a good goalkeeper: reflexes and diving.
GOALKEEPERS WITH BEST REFLEXES
Helton | 85 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Rui Patrício | 82 | Portugal | Sporting CP |
Artur Moraes | 78 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Eduardo | 78 | Portugal | Braga |
Diving is a fundamental attribute when choosing a goalkeeper. It measures the capacity for a goalkeeper to make a save when jumping.
GOALKEEPER WITH BEST DIVING
Rui Patrício | 85 | Portugal | Sporting CP |
Helton | 83 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Artur Moraes | 78 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Eduardo | 75 | Portugal | Braga |
The most experienced Ultimate Team players know that another leaning factor on a goalkeeper’s performance without considering the remaining four attributes: height. The more tall a goalkeeper is, better his chances of having a clean sheet.
TALLEST GOALKEEPERS | |||
Artur Moraes | 192 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Rui Patrício | 190 | Portugal | Sporting CP |
Helton | 189 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Eduardo | 187 | Portugal | Braga |
The choice for the best Portuguese League goalkeeper on FIFA 14 Ultimate team, is not easy.
In our opinion, Helton is the best choice. Besides being the best in only two of the six attributes and not being the tallest, he’s also the most balanced among the four gold goalkeepers playing in Portugal. Rui Patrício is our second choice.

FUT 14 Portuguese League Central Backs (CB)
A goalkeepers task is made easier if in front of him are quality central backs. Their function is to stop the opponent from getting dangerously close to your team’s goal.
HIGHEST RATED CENTRAL BACKS
Ezequiel Garay | 82 | Argentina | SL Benfica |
Eliaquim Mangala | 81 | France | FC Porto |
Nicolás Otamendi | 80 | Argentina | FC Porto |
Luisão | 80 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Maicon | 79 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Paulo Vinícius | 78 | Brazil | Braga |
Jardel | 76 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Marcos Rojo | 76 | Argentina | Sporting CP |
Diego Reyes | 75 | Mexico | FC Porto |
On a central back, two attributes assume particular importance on their performance: defending and heading.
A player with better defending will have an easier chance of dispossessing the opponent and avoid him reaching your box.
CENTRAL BACKS WITH BETTER DEFENDING
Ezequiel Garay | 84 | Argentina | SL Benfica |
Eliaquim Mangala | 82 | France | FC Porto |
Nicolás Otamendi | 81 | Argentina | FC Porto |
Luisão | 80 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Maicon | 80 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Paulo Vinícius | 80 | Brazil | Braga |
Jardel | 78 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Marcos Rojo | 77 | Argentina | Sporting CP |
Diego Reyes | 75 | Mexico | FC Porto |
On a game partially made difficult on stopping an opponent’s header in our box, possessing good heading is even more important on a central back than it was before. Allow him to be superior in your box when defending air balls but it’s also worth it on set pieces, like corners where a central backs jump may just be worth some goals.
CENTRAL BACKS WITH BETTER HEADING
Eliaquim Mangala | 87 | France | FC Porto |
Paulo Vinícius | 84 | Brazil | Braga |
Maicon | 83 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Ezequiel Garay | 81 | Argentina | SL Benfica |
Nicolás Otamendi | 81 | Argentina | FC Porto |
Luisão | 80 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Marcos Rojo | 80 | Argentina | Sporting CP |
Jardel | 77 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Diego Reyes | 74 | Mexico | FC Porto |
Defending and heading may be useless against fast opponents. It’s necessary to fight fire with fire. No likes feeling impotent when seeing you get overrun by extremely fast players. Even though, in a way, centre backs aren’t that fast, every team needs one of these players with a high pace attribute.
CENTRAL BACKS WITH BETTER PACE
Eliaquim Mangala | 77 | France | FC Porto |
Diego Reyes | 73 | Mexico | FC Porto |
Marcos Rojo | 72 | Argentina | Sporting CP |
Paulo Vinícius | 65 | Brazil | Braga |

Nicolás Otamendi | 55 | Argentina | FC Porto |
Jardel | 54 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Ezequiel Garay | 53 | Argentina | SL Benfica |
Luisão | 39 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Mangala has his room in any Portuguese League team. He has one of the best heading and jumping stats among all the FUT 14 central backs. Besides that he is the fastest Zon Sagres CB and the second with better defending stats. He is also the one with higher aggression and he scores a lot of goals.
In formations with 5 defenders, Garay is a great choice. However, with only two central backs, it may be better to use someone faster, like Paulo Vinícius.

FUT 14 Portuguese League Right Backs (RB and RWB)
Full backs have the role of troubling the mission of the wingers. Not only. In addition, good full backs also support their team mates on offensive maneuvers.
HIGHEST RATED RIGHT BACKS
Maximiliano Pereira | 77 | Uruguay | SL Benfica |
Danilo | 77 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Sílvio | 76 | Portugal | SL Benfica |
There are very important attributes in any right back: defending and pace.
Since they’re defenders they should have good defending capacities. This reduces a team’s risk of conceding.
RIGHT BACKS WITH BETTER DEFENDING
Maximiliano Pereira | 77 | Uruguay | SL Benfica |
Danilo | 76 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Sílvio | 73 | Portugal | SL Benfica |
A flanked game tends to be faster than a game based in the middle of the field. The players that fill these spaces are obligated to be fast, both penetrating defensive and attacking moves of the team. Pace is one of the most important requirements for a good full back.
RIGHT BACKS WITH BETTER PACE
Danilo | 83 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Sílvio | 78 | Portugal | SL Benfica |
Maximiliano Pereira | 74 | Uruguay | SL Benfica |
Danilo is undoubtedly the best right back playing on Portuguese League. There are no big differences between the two other right backs, Maxi Pereira and Sílvio.
Best Zon Sagres Portuguese League Right Backs in FIFA 14 Ultimate Team
Best FUT 14 Portuguese League Left Backs (LB e LWB)
Left backs have exactly the same role of their team mates on the other flank. In other words, they try to make a winger’s job hard and participate on the team’s offensive manoeuvres.
HIGHEST RATED LEFT BACKS
Alex Sandro | 79 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Siqueira | 77 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
LEFT BACKS WITH BETTER DEFENDING

Siqueira | 75 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
LEFT BACKS WITH BETTER PACE
Alex Sandro | 82 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Siqueira | 81 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
To choose the best left back from Portuguese League is something easy. Our preference goes to Alex Sandro. He is not much better than Siqueira but he is better on the more important attributes: defending and pace.

Best FUT 14 Portuguese League Defensive Midfielder (CDM)
Many of the FIFA 14 Ultimate Team formations require some midfielders that have a natural aptitude to defend. Central defensive midfielders distinguish themselves for being especially aimed to help the more retreated line of their teams. According to their attributes and their work rates, they can also be useful for starting attacks. They are players that occupy a very strategic position in the field.
HIGHEST RATED CENTRAL DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS
Nemanja Matic | 80 | Serbia | SL Benfica |
Fernando | 79 | Brazil | FC Porto |
Elias JT | 78 | Brazil | Sporting CP |
Custódio | 77 | Portugal | Braga |
Fabián Rinaudo | 77 | Argentina | Sporting CP |
Steven Defour | 77 | Belgium | FC Porto |
There are a variety of attributes in a central defensive midfielder that you have to give attention: defending, so that the first defender of team works; strength, so that you win all brawls on a prone area of the field; heading, to win possession in aerial moves like goal kicks; pace, so that you cover the most terrain on the field as possible; stamina, so they can equally participate in offensive a defensive moves (especially useful for players with high/high work rates); passing and possession so that he can properly start attacks. In our opinion the two first are the most important.
Normally using a central defensive midfielder is associated with having a deficit of elements in your defence. So, it makes sense that when you search for a player to occupy this position you’d want players that can defend.

Steven Defour | 66 | Belgium | FC Porto |
Matic is our first choice for this position. Comparing to Fernando, our second choice, he is better in almost everything. Besides that, he is the strongest defensive midfielder from Portuguese League and the one with better stamina, very important details for who plays in this position.

Best FUT 14 Portuguese League Central Midfielders (CM e CAM)
A lot of games are decided on the midfield and not close to the goals. The players that play in these zones are the ones that should create the game and define its rhythm.

Adrien | 76 | Portugal | Sporting CP |
Ruben Amorim | 75 | Portugal | SL Benfica |

Lucho González | 76 | Argentina | FC Porto |
Carlos Martins | 75 | Portugal | SL Benfica |
Ruben Amorim | 73 | Portugal | SL Benfica |
Enzo Perez is for us the best midfielder of Portuguese League. His stamina of 85 and his work rate medium / high allow him to be on the attack and on the defence. Lucho Gonzalez, Juan Fernando Quintero and Zakaria Labyad are other good alternatives.

Best FUT 14 Portuguese League Right Wingers (RM, RW e RF)
The wingers are responsible for giving game width in the attack. They’re normally very explosive players.

Alan | 79 | Brazil | Braga |
Marat Izmaylov | 78 | Russia | FC Porto |
André Carrillo | 77 | Peru | Sporting CP |
Danilo Dias | 76 | Brazil | Marítimo |
There are three fundamental attribute on a winger: pace, dribbling and passing.
Pace is probably the biggest weapon of these players. They use it to evade opponents and getting to the other side, many times through sprints on the side lines.

André Carrillo | 88 | Peru | Sporting CP |
Danilo Dias | 84 | Brazil | Marítimo |

Eduardo Salvio | 84 | Argentina | SL Benfica |
Marat Izmaylov | 84 | Russia | FC Porto |
André Carrillo | 82 | Peru | Sporting CP |
Alan | 81 | Brazil | Braga |
Danilo Dias | 79 | Brazil | Marítimo |
When reaching the opponents box the winger has to decide what to do. Normally, they choose to cross to the forwards. That is why it’s important for them to have good passing.

Marat Izmaylov | 76 | Russia | FC Porto |
Eduardo Salvio | 74 | Argentina | SL Benfica |
Danilo Dias | 72 | Brazil | Marítimo |
André Carrillo | 68 | Peru | Sporting CP |
To us, it is extremely easy to choose the best right winger of Portuguese League. Salvio is the fastest, who has better dribbling and shooting. Alan is our second choice. Marat Izmaylov is only the third option because he is too weak.

Best Portuguese League Forwards (CF e ST)
The forwards are the players on which fall the most responsibility of scoring goals.
HIGHEST RATED FORWARDS

Jackson Martínez | 81 | Colombia | FC Porto |
Lima | 80 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Éder | 79 | Portugal | Braga |
Rodrigo | 77 | Spain | SL Benfica |
To score goals shooting is necessary. If either by foot or head, the most important attribute for a forward are: shooting, heading and pace.
Most goals are scored with the foot so good shooting is a necessary attribute for a forward.
FORWARDS WITH BETTER SHOOTING
Óscar Cardozo | 85 | Paraguay | SL Benfica |
Lima | 82 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Jackson Martínez | 75 | Colombia | FC Porto |
Rodrigo | 75 | Spain | SL Benfica |

On FUT 14, knowing how to head gained another importance. Plenty of goals are born like this.

Jackson Martínez | 86 | Colombia | FC Porto |
Éder | 79 | Portugal | Braga |
Lima | 74 | Brazil | SL Benfica |
Rodrigo | 73 | Spain | SL Benfica |
Óscar Cardozo | 70 | Paraguay | SL Benfica |
Depending on the style of play and formation having good shooting and heading may not be enough for a striker. Especially in games that privilege counter-attack, pace is a very important attribute.

Éder | 84 | Portugal | Braga |
Jackson Martínez | 82 | Colombia | FC Porto |
Lima | 82 | Brazil | SL Benfica |

Jackson Martinez and Lima are, in our opinion, the two best forwards playing on Portuguese League. Cardozo has an amazing shooting but he is too slow for most of the formations.

Portuguese League Team Suggestions
A lot of people think that this is the most important part of the guide. It’s not. The thing that is really important to know is how to choose player based on their role and style of play that fits each player. And that is made in the previous chapters. The team suggestions that follow are simple graphic indicators of what we wrote previously. They should serve merely as orientation because it’s impossible to build a team that fits everyone. They depend on various factors we don’t know such as budget, formation, style of play and player preferences.
To try and explore the needs of the maximum player as possible we suggest two teams with different budgets and formations: 4-1-2-1-2 with unlimited budget and 4-3-3 with a 8k budget.

The choice for this team’s player was based on analysis made in the previous chapters.
In goal, Helton is better than Rui Patrício.
In centre back position, Mangala is unquestionable. Paulo Vinícius is a good choice for the other spot since Garay is too slow. Danilo and Alex Sandro are the full backs.
As CDM we have chosen Matic because he is the one with better quality for this position. Enzo Pérez may play as CAM but, if you want, he also plays well as CDM. There are good players to play on the wings but Gaitán and Salvio are untouchables.
Jackson Martinez scores a lot of goals with his head and Lima is very dangerous with his feet. They play very well together.

The choice for this team’s players was based on analysis made in the previous chapter.
In goal Artur is not as good as Helton or Rui Patrício but he is cheaper. In front of him, Paulo Vinícius and Marcos Rojo close the path to goal. Maxi and Alex Sandro are the other two defenders.
On the midfield, Enzo Pérez gives support to the attack but also to the defence while Quintero and Labyad have freedom to attack. On the last third of the field, Alan and Ola John are great players that support the striker Éder.

Hi Rodrigo
If you can make 2 teams of 2 different competitions or nations which teams should you make and why?
Thanks!
I have an unlimited budget by the way.
BBVA and BPL because have more quality players.
Will you be making an MLS guide?
No.
It was on our plans but not any more. We tried to publish a light guide of the less popular leagues but people here complained that they wanted the full version. So, if we must to publish the full version we will not have enough free time to make all the guides we wanted.
Do you think you could make a hybrid guide with 25k, 50k, and 100k hybrid teams
Hi.
It is not easy to do that because an hybrid may be of several leagues and nations, which means that we would need to publish several guides.
Regards
You should make an German players squad. It is in the top used country squads. Maybe you should start to make a country players guide to expose the National players to make a national squad, like the English one you plan on making. Thank you.
Hi.
Every one of these guides takes us at least one week to test the players and more 3 days to write and publish. As you can imagine, it is too much time.
The English players guide is ready to be published in the coming weeks. But it will probably the last one for FUT14. Why ? Because we have publish a light version of the Ligue 1 guide and people come complain about the pictures and other stuff that was missing.
We believe that the Germans players guide would be very similar to the Bundesliga Guide.
Regards
My quest is finished. Im gonna try to do this in the way you do.
“Soldado is the best Spanish Striker, without any discussion. However, he is quite expensive (got 4k?) forcing many to choose a different forward. For us, Aduriz and Llorente are the best for someone who wants someone with good heading, Rodrigo is best for who wants someone really really fast, and Negredo for who wants a finisher.”
🙂
Regards
You have found it!
You’ve forgotten Ruben Castro. He’s very overpowered. Linking with Negredo it’s not the best attacking but it’ll be scary.
Ohh should’ve done a cheap choice…
“Ruben Castro is our cheapest choice. He is fast with good shooting and dribbling. He may cause a lot of damage to the opponent’s defense.”
🙂
Now for left winger…
“David Villa, Christian Tello, and Diego Capel are clearly the best fitted players to occupy this position. Our preference goes to the Sporting Clube de Portugal winger because even though Villa has better Shooting, Passing, & Dribbling, physically he is too weak for the position. Tello is only a little faster than Capel and his Passing, Dribbling, and defensive stats are not as good as the Zon Sagres winger. In addition, Capel is left footed and the best crosser.
Our second choice is Villa. Despite being much slower than Tello and Capel and having low strength, he has the best shooting and 4 star skill moves and weak foot. For those who can live with his low strength we suggest using him to cut into the box.”
This text is yours, right ?
Look to your email please.
After the second batch it’s Jese
Hi,
What is the next guide you will be making?
It is secret. But we will publish it only on April.
English players. Secret spoiled. You can thank Mich for stealing my rightful place as first commenter. 😛 Why English instead of Spain’s national team? I would like to know who the best Spanish forwards and full backs are. Navas takes right wing, but who is best on the left? Villa? And who is the best ST? Soldado? I’ll never know! 🙁
🙂
It was published somewhere on this website so it is not a big secret. 🙂
Why English players ? Because most of the users of this website are from UK. You will never know. 🙂
The place with shortcuts to every fut 14 article on the site. So now im on a quest to find the best Spanish striker. If i die trying, just know i had the noblest of intents. Tell a random girl i love her or something. 🙂
Eheheh
The most are from UK………what about Egypt
Number 33 in the world.
Not bad.
i cant believe garay isnt even in the unlimited budget. I think you should look into the ingame stats instead of base card stats, Example lewandowski has only 78 shooting because ingame his freekick accuracy is only in the 40’s
Hi.
We don’t look to the stats only. We have tested all this players.
Garay is, in our opinion, a great defender. In the ‘CB’ chapter we suggest to use Garay in 5xx and 3xx formations. However, in 4xx formations we thin that he is not fast enough. We are not saying that he is not a good player. We are just saying that a faster player could be better. It is only our opinion.

I seem to have a knack for the 1st comment. The unlimited budget team is super cheap :0 i wouldnt suggest using this league unless you’re a fan of a Portuguese team or are starting out really really poor. Such a downer, aren’t i? If you’re trying to decide which league to start with before upgrading to the league you really want to do, like BPL or BBVA, i suggest Serie A for teams without full backs or Bundesliga for teams with full backs and perhaps without wingers, which are very expensive for bundesliga. Ligue 1 and Zon Sagres are options to consider.
I have missed this time. You were not the first one. 🙂
What!?!? It showed no other comment. Mind blown.
I know. But it showed ‘no other comment’ because the other comments made before yours were awaiting approval.
Liga portuguesa rules! There are such an awesome players.
My squad 4-1-2-1-2:
Helton
Sandro – Mangala – Rojo – Danilo
Matić
Ola john – Salvio
Gonzalez
Martinez – Eder
Helton is very good goalkeeper with nice reflex
Right and left backs are amazing: Nice pace, defending, dribling and also shooting is not bad!
Mangala is such an amazing player with everything what CB should have:
Pace, Strentgh, Defending and Heading
Rojo is for me better than vinicius. He’s not 2nd Mangala, but he’s qiute good.
Matić is very good player: great passsing, defending and stamina
Ola john is for me better than gaitan. He’s faster and stronger.
Salvio is not very strong, but he’s dribling is awesome.
Lucho Gonazlez is maube not the fastest, but his awesome passing and shooting, makes him amazing CAM
Martinez is also awesome player with everything
Eder is a beast, 4 me much better than Lima.
Nice guide 🙂
Thank you for your feedback. Nice to see players with teams based on other leagues besides BBVA, BPL and Bundesliga.
I have 100k coins to use on building a squad. Would you recommend the BPL 100k team or BBVA 100k team ( from your guides)?
With 100k BBVA is probbaly better.
So with unlimited coins would you pick BPL? Seems odd because BBVA has Ronaldo, Messi, and more! Can you explain why you might pick them?
With unlimited budget I choose BBVA. With a huge budget but not unlimited (1-2 millions) I pick BPL. Making a BBVA-BPL hybrid is also a very good choice.
